We have a number of world class dive sites close to Koh Tao; the amazing Chumphon Pinnacles, famous HTMS Sattakut Wreck, Shark Island and impressive Southwest Pinnacle. Not to forget the amazing swim throughs at Green Rock and Laem Thian, or night diving with barracuda at White Rock.
However, arguably the best dive site in Thailand is within daytrip range!
Sail Rock (or Hin Bae in Thai) is located south of Koh Tao, about halfway to Koh Phangan.
Sail Rock is a completely isolated rock.
This tiny granite island extends a few meters above the water. Sheer walls descend vertically down below the waterline to a depth of 25M-30M where they meet the ocean floor, which slopes away from Sail Rock to depths of around 45-50M.
This relative isolation makes Sail Rock a unique and amazing dive site. In free flowing tidal currents, coral specials thrive on the walls of Sail Rock. In turn this draws masses of aquatic species so you can see a huge range of reef species, pelagics, crustaceans and more around Sail Rock.
Even better, Sail Rock has a couple of unique features.
On one side of the dive site, a chimney extends from 12M vertically through the rock. It’s possible to swim through.
A little way off the main dive site, a second granite formation lays hidden below the surface. It’s top is at a depth of around 18M.
For experienced divers its possible to traverse from Sail Rock to the secret pinnacle. Whilst the main formation can sometimes be busy, fewer people venture to explore the hidden pinnacle. So it’s often possible to see even more amazing aquatic life away from the main dive site.
Due to the distances and journey times involved, we dive Sail Rock from Koh Tao as a full day 3 dives trip.
Sail Rock dive trips run frequently but we only go when weather and sea conditions are conducive, to make sure everyone has a great time.
Like all our dive tours, we stick to diving in small groups with experienced dive guides. And all dive gear is included.
Contact us to check availability and line up your dive trip to Sail Rock.
