Our January PADI IDC (Instructor Development Course) is underway here on Koh Tao, Thailand.
Here at Simple Life Divers we’ve got three candidates going through; Zak, Petr and Sig.
PADI Course Directors Mark and Julian kicked off the course with an orientation and recap of Divemaster exams during the morning.
Following a feast of Thai cuisine for lunch, Julian continued throughout the afternoon making the first confined water presentation.
PADI Instructors need to be competent controlling three teaching environments; Classroom theory presentations, shallow water (confined) skills sessions and open water dives.
As part of today’s confined skills presentation, Zak, Petr and Sig made their first attempt at introducing a new scuba skill to novice divers. Julian assigns ‘learning difficulties’ to simulated students which the new instructors must identify and resolve. For example, whilst teaching a student to clear a mask underwater, the student mistakenly exhales through their mouth rather than nose. The instructor must be able to identify the problem, explain to the student what they need to do differently then have them re perform the skill correctly.
For a first attempt, all three guys did really well and achieved good scores.
We wish them the best of luck for the rest of the IDC and following Instructor Examination (PADI IE).
