PADI ReActivate: FAQs
After how long away from scuba diving do I need take a refresher dive?
If you’ve had some time since you last went scuba diving and are feeling a bit rusty, it’s a good idea to join the PADI ReActivate refresher session.
There is no absolute timeframe of not diving after which you must take a refresher. PADI recommends completing a ReActivate (Scuba Refresher) if you’ve been out of the water for an extended period and no longer feel confident in your diving skills. If it has been over 2 years since your last dive, most reputable dive shops in Koh Tao will require a refresher before allowing you onto a standard fun dive boat.
This policy ensures your safety and the safety of the marine environment, as buoyancy control skills tend to fade after a year of inactivity.

Can I combine a refresher with the PADI Advanced course?
If you’re short on time, we can tailor your schedule to combine a PADI ReActivate session with your PADI Advanced Open Water course. Several of the dives which make up the PADI Advanced Course are especially beneficial if you’ve had an extended break from scuba diving – especial the peak performance buoyancy dive.
If you are interested in combining the PADI Advanced (or any other course) with a refresher dive, get in touch and we can customize a schedule for you.
I lost my PADI certification card. Can I still do a Scuba Review?
Yes, as long as you certified with PADI, SSI, or another major agency, we can look up your credentials online using your full name, email address and date of birth. You do not need your physical card to take a refresher.
Please send us your details at least 24 hours before your course so we can verify your certification in the PADI Pro database ahead of time.
What skills will I practice during the Scuba Review?
You will practice core safety skills including clearing your mask, recovering a dropped regulator, sharing air with a buddy, and mastering your buoyancy control.
Your instructor will also guide you through a thorough pre-dive safety check (BWRAF) and remind you how to read your dive computer and submersible pressure gauge (SPG).

What happens if I freak out or forget everything during the shallow water practice?
There is absolutely no pressure; our instructors are highly trained to handle anxiety and will patiently repeat any skill until you’re comfortable and ready to continue..
We start in water shallow enough that you can easily stand up. If you need extra time to adjust to breathing underwater again, we take all the time you need before moving to deeper water.
Is it cheaper to do a Scuba Refresher or just book regular Fun Dives?
A Scuba Refresher costs slightly more than a standard 2-dive fun trip because it includes dedicated, direct instructor supervision and shallow water training session.
However, many divers find it’s excellent value. A refresher helps you rebuild your confidence, improve your buoyancy and air consumption, and get much more enjoyment from your dives. Rather than spending your first dive trying to remember forgotten skills, you’ll be relaxed and ready to make the most of your time underwater.
Will I be grouped with advanced divers during my Scuba Refresher?
No, Scuba Refresher students are placed in their own dedicated group with a private or small-scale instructor ratio (maximum 4 students – usually less). You will never be paired with fast-paced advanced divers.
We carefully group our boats by experience. Your instructor will move entirely at your pace, ensuring you never feel rushed or pressured in the water.
How long does a Scuba Refresher course take in Koh Tao?
Half a day.
Usually we run the refresher session as part of an afternoon dive trip. We meet at 11:30, head out to the dive boat at midday and return by about 17:00.
The dive trip will visit two shallow dive sites.
During the first dive, we’ll review the refresher skills in shallow water before enjoying a relaxed dive to rebuild your buoyancy control and confidence.
At the second dive site you can enjoy a regular Fun Dive giving you the opportunity to put your refreshed skills into practice while exploring one of Koh Tao’s beautiful reefs.
